How To Defend Yourself Against Bullies Without Violence

          BULLY BEATDOWN was an MTV show starring Ultimate Fighting Champion Jason "Mayhem" Miller, on which he challenged bullies to get in the ring and face a professional fighter for a purse of $10,000 This program offered one thing above all else to its audience-a chance at justice. A chance to see the bully get what was coming to him. Not revenge, because the bully always willingly accepted the challenge out of arrogance. It was the apology that was important. The validation of the victims human rights to dignity and respect for their worth as fellow human beings. None of the bullies ever won. Some survived long enough to earn a fraction of the purse. But, none were as tough as they thought they were.

          Bullying has become a major problem in the 21st century. There have been hundreds of Blue Ribbon panels of experts who meet to discuss, determine and decide how to deal with bullies. Police chiefs, school administrators, psychologists, all experts in their fields, none of whom have ever been bullied; debating, defining and making recommendations on a subject about which they know very little or nothing at all.

          They all agree, however, that the victim is not allowed to fight back.

          We don’t need “experts” blaming the victims and telling us what we are doing wrong or suggesting mental health counseling for bullies who don’t understand what they are doing is inappropriate. What we need are solutions.

          Dealing with bullies falls on the victim. He must defend himself and yet not injure or embarrass the bully in any way, lest he be held accountable for defending himself. This is, of course, a completely unreasonable double standard. Here’s how to do it.

          Bullying is a display of power, usually by someone who actually has none. It relies on fear and intimidation. Lots of experts will give you strategies for dealing with bullies. What we give you here are tactics, THAT WORK!

          Strategy is all well and good on the intellectual level. Tactics are the actual physical methods of implementing strategy.

          Our strategy is to present only as much resistance as necessary to discourage the bully temporarily so we can break away and run to the relative safety of any nearby authority figure or sanctuary of the principal’s office.
